What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Botox injections block signals from the nerves to the muscle causing the muscle to no longer contract as forcefully which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.

The FDA approved such usage in the late1980s when it was discovered that Botox could stop ailments such as uncontrolled blinking and lazy eye. Cosmetic physicians have been using Botox for years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. Botox is an approved treatment for frown lines on the forehead, crow’s feet (lines around the eye), and axillary hyperhidrosis (increased sweating of the armpits).

How does Botox work?

Botox works by injecting the muscle, so it no longer contracts as forcefully, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.

Where Botox can be used?

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Under eyes
  • Brow Lift
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines (lines in the nose)
  • Chin (for dimpling)
  • Skin bands on the neck
  • Around the mouth (for smoker’s lines and down-turned corners of the mouth)

Botox is not a facial filler – it will not fill existing wrinkles or add volume to your face neither does it affect the quality of your skin, elasticity or the pigmentation.

What is Botox used for?

Botox can be used for aesthetic purposes and other conditions such as stopping excessive sweating. Recently we saw an increase of men receiving Botox into the scrotum.

  • Temporary smoothing of facial wrinkles and improving your appearance
  • Severe underarm sweating
  • Cervical dystonia – a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscle contractions
  • Blepharospasm – uncontrollable blinking
  • Strabismus – misaligned eyes
  • Chronic migraine
  • Overactive bladder

How much do Botox treatments cost?

Botox prices fluctuate depending on where you receive your treatment and the number of areas treated. It is worth doing your research before you undergo Botox treatment – and remember that going ‘cheap’ isn’t always a good idea.

Understand the cost. We charge per $11/unit. To give some perspective, the average person needs about 20-40 units to treat horizontal forehead lines, 18-30 units to treat crow’s feet around the eyes and 15-30 units to treat the glabella (men need more).

More is more, not better! Botox is a strong neurotoxin that has the potential to dramatically alter the planes of your face. And smoother doesn’t always equal prettier.

The average Botox treatment price ranges from $350 to $500 for each area injected. Botox injection cost can vary greatly according to the region and the doctor who performs the procedure.

The cost of your Botox injections will depend on other factors as well. The qualifications of the surgeon, the time of year, and how many injections you are receiving may all come into play when determining your final Botox treatment cost.

Most practices have a flat cost for each injection of Botox Cosmetic, though some will break it down by “units” used per treatment. Flat rates are usually somewhere between $300 and $1000, while per-unit rates are usually around $10-15 per unit.

Will Insurance Cover the Cost of Botox Treatment?

There are several medically related Botox treatments that are usually covered by insurance, including treatment for blepharospasm (uncontrollable eye twitching), excessive sweating, constant pain, and others. Insurance coverage for cosmetic uses of Botox injections is much less common, but you should consult your insurance provider to find out if you have coverage for Botox treatment.
