LET’S TALK MUFFIN TOP
The dreaded muffin top
Yes, I know it’s really hard to flatten your stomach. But trust me… If you take the time to find out what’s causing this issue, find the root cause, you can nip it in the butt.
Of course, we all know it’s a wise decision to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent extra fat around your waistline.
But just for fun, I thought I’d highlight the main causes of the so-called muffin top, and a few basics I think everyone can follow to help eliminate that unwanted fat!
Are you really eating what you should be eating?Diet matters… OBVIOUSLY!
If you consume a lot of food that contain artificial ingredients, you’re destined to pay a price; makes senses, right?
Instead, look for foods that help shrink your muffin top!
So, stop consuming sugary sodas, high-sodium foods, and artificial ingredients; and start saying yes to avocado, nuts, green tea, yogurt, berries, red chili peppers, fatty fish, grape fruit, celery and sweet potatoes.
Do you exercise the way you should for your body type?
Incorporating physical exercise into your daily routine is a no-brainer if you want slimmer waistline.
Physical exercise will not only enable you to deflate that stubborn muffin top but also help you get a stronger core, better posture, and sexier abs.
Plus, as a bonus, nothing helps to boost confidence quite like feeling strong!!
I’ve found that some of the most effective exercises are as simple as plank, side plank, scissor kicks, vacuum exercise (think belly dancer), opposite arm and leg raise and bicycle crunch.
I would also recommend talking with your physician about your plan to maintain an exercise routine.
They will help you find the best combination given your age and physical condition
Are you keeping calm and carrying on?
Fact: when you’re stressed, your body produces cortisol and THAT’S what increases your appetite for sugar.
Which in turn feeds the fat cells around your waist, and over time, creates the muffin top belly. Cortisol is the main stress hormone designed to get you out of danger.
But before you go cursing off Cortisol, know that it also has positive functions.
Fact: when you feel the positive effects of cortisol and adrenalin, your body releases extra energy and increases your focus.
Where Cortisol starts to affect us negatively is when we live with constantly high cortisol levels.
Cortisol also raises your blood pressure and modulates your immune function.
In a nut shell, muffin tops are associated with cortisol because fat cells in the belly have four times more cortisol receptors compared to fat cells elsewhere.
So yes, your stress is literally feeding your muffin top.
How is aging affecting the “Muffin”?
Although any woman can get a muffin top, the brutal truth is that women who are going through pre-menopause and menopause are definitely more likely to gain excess belly weight.
Especially deep inside the belly.
As the menstrual cycle ends and estrogen levels drop, body fat is distributed from the hips thighs and buttocks to the abdomen.
So, your hips and butt my shrink, but your belly will be the unfortunate beneficiary!
Yes, I do think we all need small amount of fat in our bellies!
BUT after menopause, the amount often becomes excessive which can turn out to be a source of anxiety!!
How is pregnancy affecting the “Muffin”?
During pregnancy, you’ll notice the stretching of the abdominal wall (including skin and abdominal muscles).
Most women will notice this more with a large baby or after multiple pregnancies.
Now OF COURSE all women will have a loose abdominal wall immediately after childbirth.
But there are certainly things you can do to help you get back to your pre-pregnancy shape!
However, going back to that pre-pregnancy shape depends on a few factors.
These tips may help you control your weight gain during pregnancy:
- During your pregnancy, try your best to limit your weight gain by paying attention to what you’re eating; Avoid those artificial ingredients.
- Pregnancy is never a good excuse to let your exercise routine go! There are some forms of physical exercise that are safe to do during your pregnancy so try maintaining a regime.
These tips will help you minimize your post-pregnancy belly:
- Continue paying attention to your diet after giving birth. Try to reduce the amount of adipose tissue (loose connective tissue) in your abdominal wall.
- Start walking regularly!! Brisk walking is extremely beneficial and will help tighten up the abdominal wall muscles.
- Do not wear low-rise pants and jeans (or midriff tops) … This one’s just a good all-around tip.
