Laser Hair Removal vs IPL: What Is the Difference?
They both use light, but they are not the same technology. True laser hair removal uses a precise wavelength selected for the client’s skin and hair. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light filtered for different targets. Understanding that difference can help you choose a safer, more appropriate treatment—not simply the lowest price or the most familiar name.

In short: laser hair removal and IPL can both reduce unwanted hair, but they deliver light differently. A true laser uses a specific wavelength; IPL emits a range of wavelengths and relies on filters. At Sparkle, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus because its 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths allow us to select a more specific approach according to skin tone, hair characteristics and treatment area. IPL is a valuable technology for several skin concerns, but it is not our primary platform for hair removal.
Start With the Basics
Laser and IPL both use light. The precision is different.
Both technologies try to deliver enough energy to the pigment in the hair so that heat reaches the follicle. The important difference is how that light is produced and delivered.
True laser hair removal
A laser produces a specific wavelength of light. That wavelength has predictable characteristics, including how strongly it interacts with melanin and how deeply it travels. This allows the provider to select a wavelength and treatment settings based on the individual client.
IPL hair reduction
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It is not a laser. It emits a broad range of wavelengths, and filters are used to narrow the light for a particular purpose. IPL can be useful for hair reduction and several skin concerns, but its suitability depends heavily on the device, filter, skin tone and operator.
Our honest view: IPL is not automatically ineffective or unsafe, and laser is not automatically superior in every situation. The device, wavelength or filter, settings, cooling, skin assessment and operator’s training all matter. For hair removal, Sparkle prefers the control and wavelength selection available with a dedicated dual-wavelength laser.

Results and suitability vary. No light-based device can reliably target hair without enough pigment, including many blond, red, grey and white hairs.
Skin Tone Matters
For darker skin, choosing the correct wavelength is essential.
The challenge in hair removal is that melanin exists in both the hair and the skin. The goal is to heat the pigment in the follicle while limiting unnecessary heat in the epidermis. As skin melanin increases, wavelength selection, pulse duration, energy, spot size, cooling and provider experience become increasingly important.
The GentleMax Pro Plus gives our team access to the 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which travels deeper and has lower absorption by surface melanin than Alexandrite. This does not eliminate risk and does not make every setting appropriate. It gives a trained provider a more suitable tool for many medium to deeper skin tones.

Why experience with darker skin matters: deeper skin tones are not a category that should be treated with one conservative preset. Safe, effective treatment requires recognizing undertone, tanning, recent sun exposure, follicle depth, hair diameter and the skin’s response during treatment.
Where IPL Fits
IPL is useful technology. We simply use it for different goals.
Sparkle is not opposed to IPL. We use professional IPL technology for selected skin concerns, including visible redness and certain types of pigmentation, when the client is an appropriate candidate. That experience is part of why we can explain the difference without treating one device category as universally “good” and the other as universally “bad.”
For hair reduction, we choose a dedicated laser platform because it gives us two defined wavelengths and a clearer way to match the technology to the client’s skin tone. For redness or pigment, a carefully selected IPL treatment may be the more logical tool. The concern should determine the technology—not the other way around.
