The Best EltaMD Sunscreen Alternatives in Canada

EltaMD is no longer available through authorized Canadian channels—but you do not have to guess at a replacement. We mapped the EltaMD formulas Canadians searched for most to carefully selected Vivier and ZO Skin Health sunscreens available from Sparkle.

What is the best alternative to EltaMD sunscreen in Canada?

For most people who loved the clear, light feel of EltaMD UV Clear, the closest Sparkle alternative is Vivier SHEER Broad Spectrum SPF 45. If tint and visible-light protection are priorities, consider ZO Sheer Fluid Tint Broad-Spectrum SPF 45. Dry or dehydrated skin may prefer the more radiant feel of Vivier SHEER SPF 30 Mineral.

There is no universal one-for-one dupe. EltaMD products differed in tint, finish, moisturizing ingredients, zinc concentration and water resistance. The Sparkle approach is to replace the job your sunscreen performed—not simply match a familiar product name.

EltaMD alternatives at a glance

Use this table as a starting point, then confirm the details below or take the quiz. “Closest match” describes function and experience; it does not mean the formulas are identical.

Which alternative fits your former EltaMD routine?

If you used EltaMD UV Clear Clear

Start with Vivier SHEER SPF 45. Its clear, soft-matte finish makes it the most intuitive everyday transition for many combination, oily and acne-prone skin types. The 90 mL format is also practical for daily face, neck and décolleté use.

Know before switching: its 9.9% zinc oxide formula is not a recreation of UV Clear, and it does not supply the same 5% niacinamide. Keep a separate niacinamide step only if it already suits your routine.

If you used UV Clear Tinted or UV Physical

Start with ZO Sheer Fluid Tint SPF 45. This 16% zinc oxide mineral fluid comes in Fair–Light, Light–Medium and Medium–Tan. It provides a natural-looking tint that can soften the appearance of redness and uneven tone.

Why tint matters: tinted formulas containing iron oxides may add visible-light protection, an important consideration for people managing melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

If you used UV Daily Clear

Start with Vivier SHEER SPF 30 Mineral. Its hydrating, radiant finish is a stronger fit for dry, dehydrated, mature or sensitive-feeling skin than a matte sunscreen would be. It combines 8% zinc oxide with 10% titanium dioxide.

Know before switching: the SPF level and ingredient deck differ from UV Daily. It is a sensory and skin-finish match, not a formula duplicate.

If you want a high-zinc, untinted mineral fluid

Consider ZO Sheer Fluid SPF 50. Its 22% zinc oxide mineral formula dries clear with a natural finish. It may appeal to people who prioritize a mineral-only active and do not want tint.

Post-treatment note: “mineral” does not automatically mean suitable immediately after a peel, laser or other procedure. Follow the timeline and products approved by your treating provider.

The important UV Sport exception

ZO Gel Sunscreen SPF 50 is the closest functional match in our current collection for active days: it is a clear gel and is labelled water and perspiration resistant for 40 minutes. However, it is not a zinc-based formula, and former EltaMD UV Sport users should note that UV Sport was labelled water resistant for 80 minutes.

For swimming, heavy perspiration or extended outdoor activity, follow the directions and water-resistance time on the exact product label, reapply generously, and add shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses.

Choose by the day ahead

  • Everyday commute: finish and comfort may lead.
  • Outdoor exercise: sweat resistance matters.
  • Pool or beach: check water-resistance timing.
  • After a procedure: use only provider-approved care.

Frequently asked questions

Is EltaMD sunscreen discontinued in Canada?

EltaMD products are no longer available through authorized Canadian distribution. That does not mean every EltaMD product has been discontinued globally. Canadians may still see old inventory or cross-border listings, but product authenticity, storage, expiry, Canadian labelling and return support should be considered.

What is the closest alternative to EltaMD UV Clear?

For clear everyday wear, Sparkle’s closest general match is Vivier SHEER SPF 45 because of its clear, soft-matte finish and suitability for normal, combination, oily and acne-prone skin. It is not an ingredient-for-ingredient dupe and does not replace UV Clear’s 5% niacinamide.

What is the closest tinted EltaMD alternative?

ZO Sheer Fluid Tint SPF 45 is Sparkle’s leading tinted mineral alternative. It uses 16% zinc oxide and comes in Fair–Light, Light–Medium and Medium–Tan. Shade, undertone and preferred coverage should still guide the final choice.

Which alternative is best for dry skin?

Vivier SHEER SPF 30 Mineral is the strongest starting point in this comparison for dry, dehydrated or mature skin because of its more hydrating, radiant finish. Individual tolerance varies, so patch testing is sensible when skin is reactive.

Which alternative is best for melasma or dark spots?

A tinted sunscreen may be helpful because iron oxides can extend protection into visible light. ZO Sheer Fluid Tint SPF 45 is the tinted option in this guide. Sunscreen is one part of a pigmentation plan; seek professional guidance for persistent or changing pigmentation.

Can I use these sunscreens after laser, a peel or microneedling?

Only when your treating provider says your skin is ready. Product choice and timing depend on the procedure, skin response and aftercare plan. Do not assume a mineral formula is automatically appropriate immediately after treatment.

Can pressed mineral powder replace liquid sunscreen?

No. Osmosis Mineral Pressed Base can add tint and help with touch-ups, but Sparkle recommends it over a properly applied liquid sunscreen—not as your only sun protection.

How much sunscreen should I apply?

Apply generously and evenly to exposed skin before sun exposure, following the directions on the exact product label. Reapply as directed and after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Sunscreen works best with shade, protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
