IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It uses controlled light pulses to target selected pigment and visible vessels; it is not a laser. We review your skin tone, sun exposure and concern before recommending treatment.
Brown spots & sun damage
Selected sun-related pigment may be suitable. Not every brown patch should be treated with IPL.
Redness & visible vessels
Discuss your redness pattern and small visible vessels. Suitability and response depend on your skin and the treatment plan.
Uneven tone

We review your skin tone, pigment and redness pattern, medications, skincare and recent sun exposure. We explain suitability, limitations and alternatives.
02 Your plan & treatment
Review the area, passes, device, price and consent before deciding. Expect warmth or a quick snapping sensation. Protective eyewear is worn, and settings may be adjusted to your skin response.
03 Aftercare & review
Your provider explains recovery, skincare, sun protection and when to review your response. The number and spacing of sessions are personalized.

Changes develop over time.
Treated brown spots may darken before flaking or fading; redness and tone changes may develop gradually through a series. Your response, recovery and maintenance needs vary.

A little preparation. Clear guidance afterward.
IPL is not suitable for every skin tone or pigment concern. Recent tanning, melasma, heat-sensitive pigment, irritation and some medications may mean delaying treatment or choosing another approach. Tell us about pregnancy or breastfeeding, photosensitizing medications, isotretinoin history, blood thinners, autoimmune conditions, cold sores, infections, recent procedures and any reaction history.
Before your visit
- Avoid tanning, tanning beds, self-tanner, and significant sun exposure before treatment.
- Pause retinol, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliants, bleaching creams, and irritating actives as directed.
- Tell us about medications, supplements, cold sores, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and recent procedures.
- Do not arrive sunburned, irritated, scratched, freshly waxed, or actively flared in the treatment area.
- Arrive with clean skin and no makeup, sunscreen, perfume, lotion, oil, or self-tanner on the area.
Aftercare
- Redness, warmth, mild swelling, or a sunburn-like feeling can be normal temporarily.
- Brown spots may darken before flaking or fading. Do not pick or scrub them off.
- Avoid heat, intense exercise, saunas, hot tubs, exfoliants, retinol, and harsh products until calm.
- Use gentle skincare and daily SPF. Sun protection is essential after IPL.
Risks & realistic expectations
Temporary redness, warmth, discomfort or swelling can occur. Risks also include blistering, burns, infection, pigment changes, scarring and unsatisfactory results. Protective eyewear, assessment and aftercare matter; they do not eliminate every risk.
When to contact Sparkle: Contact the clinic for blistering, crusting, severe swelling, worsening pain, drainage, signs of infection, unusual pigment changes or any reaction that worries you. For urgent symptoms, seek medical care immediately.

How many IPL photofacial sessions will I need?
Many plans involve a series. The number and spacing depend on pigment, redness, skin response, sun exposure and goals. Your provider explains the proposed plan and total quote at consultation.
What does IPL feel like, and is there downtime?
You may feel warmth or a quick snapping sensation. Temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling can follow treatment. Treated brown spots may darken before flaking or fading. Follow your provider’s recovery guidance rather than assuming no downtime.
Can IPL treat melasma or all skin tones?
IPL is not automatically appropriate for melasma or every skin tone. Heat and inflammation can worsen some pigment concerns. Your skin, tanning, pigment history and medications need assessment; another approach may be recommended.
Why does Sparkle prefer Nordlys, and is ICON still available?
Nordlys is currently Sparkle’s preferred IPL platform, and ICON is also available. Your provider recommends the device and settings based on your assessment—not a promise that one brand is best for everyone.
Can IPL be combined with other treatments?
A combination plan may be considered after assessment. Your provider explains which treatments, sequencing, recovery and additional cost are appropriate. Do not assume that every treatment can be performed in the same visit.
