Understanding the Treatment

What Are Platysmal Bands — and Can Botox Fix Them?

The platysma is a broad, thin muscle that runs from your collarbone up through the neck and into the lower face. When you’re young, it lies flat and smooth. As you age, the muscle weakens and the two bands that form its edges pull apart and push forward — creating the visible vertical cords on the neck that become more prominent when you tense your jaw, look in certain lighting, or turn your head to the side.

Botox injected directly into those bands relaxes the muscle, smoothing the neck and — when the jawline is included — creating what is known as a Nefertiti lift: a non-surgical tightening of the lower face and neck that restores definition without surgery or downtime.

The Cause

Platysmal bands are primarily a function of age, genetics, and how active your neck muscles are — not weight. Some people notice them in their 30s; others not until their 50s.

The Solution

Botox relaxes the bands directly. The Nefertiti lift extends the treatment to the jawline, reducing the downward pull of the platysma and restoring lower-face definition — without filler or surgery.

The Result

A smoother neck and a cleaner jawline. Not overdone. Not frozen. Just noticeably more youthful — like a well-rested version of your own face. Results typically last 3–4 months.

What is the Nefertiti lift? The Nefertiti lift combines platysmal band injections with strategic placement along the lower jawline, relaxing the downward pull of the platysma and allowing the muscles that lift the face to work without competition. The result is a subtle but visible tightening of the jawline and neck — no surgery, no filler, no downtime.

What to Expect

The Sparkle Process — start to finish.

01

Consultation

We assess the strength and separation of your platysmal bands, your skin condition, and your lower-face anatomy. Injection mapping is completely individual — your band pattern, muscle strength, and goals all influence placement and dosage.

02

Treatment (15–25 min)

Small injections placed along the length of each band and, for a Nefertiti lift, along the lower jawline. Most clients find the neck less sensitive than the forehead. In and out in under 30 minutes with no numbing cream required.

03

Results (2–3 Weeks)

The bands begin to soften within the first week. By week two, most clients notice the neck looks noticeably smoother. Full results develop over 2–3 weeks and hold for 3–4 months.

04

Maintenance

Most clients return at 3–4 months. With consistent treatment, results gradually hold longer as the muscle adapts. After the first year, some clients need only 2–3 treatments annually.

Neck Rejuvenation Guide

Matching the right treatment to your neck concern.

Platysmal bands are one of several things that can make the neck look aged. Understanding which concern you have determines which treatment will actually help.

Best treatment: Platysmal Botox / Nefertiti Lift. Botox relaxes the active muscle causing the bands directly. Results develop over 2–3 weeks and typically last 3–4 months. This is the right treatment when the concern is the visible vertical cords themselves.

Best treatment: RF Skin Tightening — TempSure or Matrix Pro RF. Botox does not address loose skin. RF energy stimulates collagen and physically tightens the skin from within. If loose skin is your primary concern, this is the correct approach — with or without Botox for the bands.

Best treatment: Skinboosters or CO2RE Laser Resurfacing. Horizontal lines are caused by repeated skin folding and collagen loss — not muscle activity. They need hydration and resurfacing, not muscle relaxation. Botox will not improve necklace lines.

Best treatment: Skinboosters, Exosome Therapy, or CO2RE Laser. Crepiness is a skin quality issue, not a muscle issue. These treatments rebuild the skin’s hydration and structural integrity from within. Botox is not the solution for crepey texture.

Best treatment: Nefertiti Lift + optional Jawline Filler. Relaxing the downward platysma pull restores some definition on its own. Adding filler along the jaw edge creates even sharper contour. Both options discussed at your consultation.

Best treatment: Nefertiti Lift + RF Tightening + Skinboosters. A phased combination approach addresses all three layers — active muscle, structural support, and skin quality. This is the most comprehensive result for clients with multiple concurrent neck concerns.

Candidacy

Who gets the best results from platysmal band treatment?

Best candidates

  • Visible vertical cords on the neck, especially when tensing or straining
  • Jawline that looks less defined, with a slight downward pull
  • Horizontal neck lines that worsen with platysma activation
  • Looking for a non-surgical, no-downtime option with natural results

May not be the right fit

  • Primary concern is loose or crepey skin rather than active muscle bands — skin laxity responds better to RF or laser resurfacing
  • Significant volume loss in the neck area — requires a different approach
  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Certain neuromuscular conditions — assessed at consultation

Consultation first

If you’re unsure whether your concern is bands, laxity, or texture — that’s exactly what a free consultation is for. We’ll assess your anatomy and tell you honestly what Botox alone will achieve and whether a combined approach would serve you better.

Why Choose Sparkle

What sets us apart for platysmal band treatment in Moncton.

The neck is one of the trickiest areas to inject. This is precisely the kind of detail that separates a trained, thoughtful injector from someone who learned from a weekend course.

Advanced anatomy training

Our injectors train through Sparkle Academy in advanced injection anatomy — including nuanced individual variation in platysmal band structure. They map your specific band pattern and adjust dosage for muscle strength.

Holistic treatment planning

We think about how your neck interacts with your jawline, lower face volume, and overlying skin quality. Some clients get everything they want from Botox alone. Others get significantly better results with a combined approach. We’ll tell you honestly which is right for you.

Physician medical oversight

Sparkle operates under the oversight of Dr. Carole Williams, MD OBGYN — Medical Director. Having a physician-led team means you’re never on your own if anything unexpected occurs. We have the training and protocols to address it.

Natural results, not overcorrection

The goal is a smoother, more youthful neck that still moves naturally. Our injectors use precise, conservative dosing and check in at your follow-up to ensure results are landing exactly as they should.

When injected correctly into the superficial platysma by a trained injector, the product stays in the right layer and does not affect swallowing muscles or vocal cords. Swallowing difficulty is extremely rare and almost always results from product placed too deeply or in the wrong location. With a trained injector who understands neck anatomy, this risk is very low. We screen your history and anatomy at consultation to ensure nothing raises your individual risk.

Typically 3–4 months for most people. The neck metabolizes Botox slightly faster than the forehead because the platysma is an active muscle used constantly for speaking, turning, and swallowing. With consistent treatment, many clients find results hold gradually longer as the muscle adapts to being relaxed over time.

Platysmal bands only: $250–$450. Nefertiti Lift (bands + jawline): $350–$600. Nefertiti Lift + RF Skin Tightening: $600–$1,000. Full Neck Package (Botox + Skinboosters + RF): $900–$1,500. Your exact investment is confirmed at your free consultation based on your anatomy, dosage, and goals.

The neck tends to bruise more than the forehead because there are more superficial blood vessels in the area. Light pinpoint bruising is common and usually resolves within 3–5 days. Most clients cover it with a light scarf or concealer and return to normal activity immediately. There is no structural downtime. Avoid intense exercise and heat for the first 24 hours.

A surgical neck lift physically removes excess skin and tightens underlying structures. It is permanent and dramatic, with significant recovery time. Botox relaxes the muscle causing the bands and reduces the downward pull on the lower face — non-surgical, reversible, no recovery time. For prominent bands with good skin quality, Botox can give a result that surprises people with how effective it is. They are not competing options; they serve different severities of concern.

These are two different concerns. Platysmal bands are vertical cords running lengthwise down the neck — caused by the muscle separating over time. Tech neck or necklace lines are horizontal creases that run across the neck — caused by repeated skin folding and collagen loss. Botox addresses the vertical bands. Horizontal lines respond better to skinboosters, laser resurfacing, or topical collagen-building treatments.

Yes, and often it is the right approach. Botox addresses the active muscle bands — it does not improve loose skin, crepey texture, or horizontal neck lines. Combining Botox with RF skin tightening, CO2RE laser, or skinboosters gives a much more comprehensive result for clients with multiple neck concerns. We are straightforward about which combination makes the most sense for your goals and budget.

There is no set age. Some people notice platysmal bands in their late 30s; others not until their 50s or 60s. The right time to start is when it is bothering you. Some clients use it preventively in their late 30s to slow band separation. Others come in their 50s or 60s for a non-surgical option. Both approaches are valid — we will meet you where you are.

Yes, when performed by a trained injector who understands neck anatomy. Botox has an excellent safety record and has been used clinically for decades. The platysma is a well-established injection site. Small risks — bruising, mild asymmetry, rare temporary weakness in nearby structures — are minimized by proper technique, correct placement, and appropriate dosing. All treatment is performed under physician medical oversight at Sparkle.
