Tattoo Removal Guide

How Many Tattoo Removal Sessions Will I Need?

Many tattoos need around 5–12 laser sessions for substantial fading or removal—but that is only a planning range. Ink colour, density, depth, tattoo location, skin tone, previous treatments, and your goal all affect how many sessions you may actually need.

The important part

Your tattoo does not have to fit an “average.” Your treatment plan should fit your tattoo.

Quick Answer

Most tattoos need multiple laser sessions. Many fall somewhere around 5–12 treatments.

Smaller, lighter, older, or amateur tattoos may need fewer. Dense professional tattoos, layered cover-ups, multicolour tattoos, or previously treated tattoos may need more. The estimate can also change once we see how your tattoo responds.

Small + Older Amateur Tattoo

Often 3–6 sessions
Less pigment can sometimes mean a shorter treatment plan.

Small Professional Tattoo

Often 5–10 sessions
Professional ink is usually denser and placed more consistently.

Dense or Multicolour Tattoo

Often 6–15+ sessions
More pigment, more colours, and multiple layers can extend the plan.

Fading for a Cover-Up

Often 1–4 sessions
You may only need enough fading to give your tattoo artist more options.

These are general planning ranges, not guarantees. Your tattoo may require fewer or more treatments.

Why It Takes Time

The laser breaks up the ink. Your body clears it.

PicoWay delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses into tattoo pigment. Those pulses fragment the ink into smaller particles. Your body then gradually clears those particles over the weeks after treatment.

That is why tattoo removal is not something we try to cram into back-to-back appointments. Your skin needs to heal, and your body needs time to do its part.

More treatments, closer together, does not automatically mean faster removal.

Treating skin before it is ready can increase irritation and pigment complications without necessarily making the tattoo disappear faster. Session timing should be based on healing and treatment response—not impatience.

What Changes Your Session Count?

Six things we look at before estimating your tattoo removal plan.

1. Ink Colour

Different pigments respond to different wavelengths. Black is often more predictable, while some lighter and cosmetic pigments can be less predictable.

2. Ink Density + Layers

Dense professional tattoos generally contain more pigment. Cover-ups may contain multiple layers that become visible as the top layer fades.

3. Depth + Tattoo Technique

Professional and amateur tattoos can place pigment at different depths. Two tattoos that look similar can behave very differently under laser treatment.

4. Tattoo Location

Tattoos on hands, feet, ankles, and lower legs may fade more slowly than tattoos in areas with stronger circulation.

5. Skin Tone + Pigment Risk

Skin tone influences wavelength and setting selection. A more conservative plan may be appropriate when pigment changes are a concern.

6. Previous Treatment + Healing

Previous laser sessions, scar tissue, past reactions, and how your tattoo heals can all change the treatment plan as you go.

How Long Does Tattoo Removal Take?

Think in months, not weeks.

Tattoo removal sessions are generally spaced several weeks apart. A common planning interval is around 6–10 weeks, although your provider may recommend more time depending on your skin, tattoo, treatment response, and healing.

Your tattoo may continue fading between appointments. Waiting is not “doing nothing.” It is part of the treatment process.

8 sessions × 8 weeks apart

That treatment series can extend over roughly 14 months from the first appointment to the eighth appointment.

And fading may continue after the final treatment.

Goal: Remove as much as possible

You may need a longer series because we are trying to fade the tattoo as far as your ink and skin will safely allow. Complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Goal: Fade it for a cover-up

You may only need enough fading to stop the old design from interfering with the new one. For some tattoos, approximately 1–4 sessions may be enough to give your tattoo artist more flexibility.

Why PicoWay?

Different tattoo colours may need different wavelengths.

PicoWay is a picosecond laser platform with multiple wavelength options used for tattoo removal. The wavelength and settings are selected around the tattoo pigment, skin tone, previous response, and treatment goal.

1064 nm

Used for selected darker tattoo pigments, including black.

532 nm

Used for selected warmer tattoo pigments such as red, orange, and yellow.

730 / 785 nm

Dedicated wavelength options used for selected blue and green tattoo pigments.

The appropriate wavelength depends on the tattoo pigment, skin type, and provider assessment.

Cosmetic Tattoos Need Extra Caution

Microblading, lip blush, and flesh-toned pigments can behave differently.

Some cosmetic tattoo pigments can darken after laser exposure. That is why these tattoos need careful assessment and, in some cases, a test spot before treating the entire area.

This is not the place for a one-size-fits-all promise. The pigment needs to be assessed before a realistic plan can be made.

A consultation matters most when the tattoo is unpredictable.

That includes cosmetic pigment, layered cover-ups, previous laser treatment, scarring, unusual colours, or tattoos on pigment-prone skin.

How We Plan Tattoo Removal at Sparkle

We would rather give you a realistic range than promise you an exact number.

At Sparkle Lifestyle & MediSpa, your tattoo removal plan is based on the tattoo in front of us—not a preset package. We look at colour, density, depth, location, skin tone, previous treatment, healing history, and whether you want full removal or strategic fading for a cover-up.

We use Candela PicoWay technology and adjust the plan as your tattoo responds. Some tattoos move quickly. Some are stubborn. Most are somewhere in between.

Tattoo Removal Sessions FAQ

The questions people usually ask before starting.

The goal is not to give every tattoo the same number. It is to understand what affects your timeline before you start.

Many tattoos may need around 5–12 sessions for substantial fading or removal, but there is no reliable universal average. Smaller or lighter tattoos may need fewer, while dense, layered, multicolour, or previously treated tattoos may need more.

Complete tattoo removal in one session is not a realistic expectation for most tattoos. The laser fragments pigment, then your body needs time to gradually clear those particles before the next treatment.

Sessions are commonly spaced several weeks apart. Around 6–10 weeks can be a useful planning range, but your provider may recommend more time based on healing, tattoo response, treatment area, skin type, and the condition of the skin.

Black ink is often one of the more predictable tattoo pigments to treat, but colour alone does not determine the number of sessions. Ink density, depth, tattoo location, skin tone, previous treatment, and individual response also matter.

Some tattoos may only need around 1–4 sessions when the goal is to fade the existing design enough for a new cover-up. The amount of fading needed depends on the old tattoo and what your tattoo artist plans to place over it.

No. A consultation can give you a reasonable estimate, but the plan may change once we see how your tattoo and skin respond. We would rather adjust the estimate honestly than promise an exact number we cannot guarantee.
