What Is the PicoWay® Laser?

Not all tattoo removal lasers are the same. Older Q-switched lasers use heat to break up ink — which typically requires more sessions and carries higher risk of scarring and pigmentation changes.

The PicoWay® laser works differently. It delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses using acoustic photo-mechanical energy — shattering ink into dust-like particles without burning surrounding tissue. Your body’s immune system then naturally flushes the particles away.

What makes PicoWay® different:

  • Works on more colours — including stubborn blues, greens, and purified skin tones alongside standard black ink
  • Safe for all skin tones — minimized risk of hyperpigmentation or scarring from fair to dark complexions
  • Fewer sessions — breaks down ink faster than traditional Q-switched lasers
  • Minimal downtime — quick sessions with a manageable healing process

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Tattoo removal with PicoWay® may be right for you if you:

  • Have unwanted tattoos you’d like to fade or fully remove
  • Want to clear space for a cover-up tattoo
  • Have cosmetic tattoo regret — microblading, brow tattoos, lip liner
  • Are dealing with tattoos that have faded, blurred, or stretched over time
  • Want a medical-grade solution with professional oversight

Tattoo removal is not recommended if you:

  • Are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have active skin infections at the tattoo site
  • Have certain autoimmune or healing disorders — discussed at consultation

A consultation is always required first. Our team will assess your tattoo’s age, ink colour, depth, and placement to give you a realistic picture of what to expect.

Treatment Areas

PicoWay® tattoo removal can be applied virtually anywhere on the body:

  • Arms, wrists, and hands
  • Back, chest, and shoulders
  • Legs and ankles
  • Cosmetic tattoos — brows, lip liner, permanent eyeliner (case by case)
  • Any area with unwanted or faded ink

The Sparkle Process — What to Expect

Step 1: Consultation & Assessment

We review your tattoo’s size, ink colours, depth, age, and your skin tone. You’ll receive a customized treatment plan with a realistic session estimate and timeline. This is also when we discuss comfort options and aftercare so you know exactly what’s ahead.

Step 2: Pre-Treatment Preparation

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before each session
  • Keep the area moisturized and well-hydrated
  • Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment
  • Avoid retinoids, glycolic acids, or harsh active ingredients on the area for 1 week prior
  • Do not apply numbing cream, makeup, or other products to the tattoo on treatment day
  • Let your provider know about any medications, especially those that increase light sensitivity

Step 3: Your Treatment Session

Sessions typically run 10–30 minutes depending on tattoo size. During the treatment:

  • The PicoWay® laser delivers rapid, high-energy pulses into the tattoo pigment
  • You may feel a warm snapping sensation — often described as bacon grease — as the laser passes over the ink
  • A white frosting may appear on the skin during treatment — this is a normal laser-ink reaction and fades within minutes
  • Cooling or numbing options are available if needed; a squeezy ball is always available

Step 4: Immediate Aftercare

Right after your session, we apply ice to soothe the area and go over aftercare before you leave. Mild redness, swelling, or pinpoint bleeding is normal and typically resolves within a few hours to a few days.

Step 5: Recovery & Healing Between Sessions

  • Keep the area clean and dry; wash gently with mild soap and pat dry
  • Apply aloe vera gel or a thin layer of Aquaphor to support healing
  • Avoid sun exposure on the treated area for at least 2 weeks post-session; use SPF 30+ if going outside
  • Avoid heat, saunas, hot tubs, and intense exercise for 48–72 hours
  • Do not pick at scabbing or crusting — let the skin heal naturally
  • Avoid waxing, exfoliating products, and tanning products until fully healed

Sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart to allow your immune system to fully clear the broken-down ink between treatments.

Why Choose Sparkle for Tattoo Removal?

Sparkle is where other clinics come to train.

Madelaine Caissie is a certified National Laser Clinical Trainer — she has trained laser technicians across the country and performs treatments at Sparkle directly. When you choose Sparkle for tattoo removal, you are treated by the person other clinics learn from.

  • The right technology — PicoWay®, recognized as a gold-standard picosecond laser for tattoo and pigment removal
  • Clinical training at the highest level — Madelaine Caissie, National Laser Clinical Trainer, leads all laser treatments
  • Physician oversight — Every laser protocol is conducted under the medical direction of Dr. Carole Williams, MD OBGYN
  • Customized treatment plans — No cookie-cutter approach; your tattoo’s ink type, depth, and location all inform your plan
  • Honest expectations — We tell you what is realistically achievable so you can make an informed decision

Number of Sessions

Most tattoo removals require 6–12 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart for full removal. Fading for cover-up purposes may be achievable in fewer sessions. Your provider will give you an honest estimate at your consultation — we do not overpromise.

Factors that affect the number of sessions needed:

  • Ink colours (black responds fastest; blues, greens, and purified pigments take longer)
  • Ink depth and density
  • Tattoo age (older tattoos often fade faster)
  • Location on the body (areas with better circulation typically respond better)
  • Your skin tone and immune response

Pricing & Packages

Laser tattoo removal with PicoWay® is priced based on tattoo size, ink colours, and the number of sessions required.

Starting at $150 per session for small tattoos.

Most complete series investments range from approximately $800–$2,500, depending on tattoo complexity.

Results Timeline

  • After 1 session — Visible lightening in many cases, especially on black ink
  • After 3–6 sessions — Significant fading; multicoloured tattoos take longer depending on pigment type
  • After full series — Many tattoos are nearly or fully removed; some complex tattoos require additional sessions

Results vary based on ink age, depth, colour, tattoo size, and individual skin response. Cosmetic tattoos (microblading, brow tattoos) may require fewer sessions but need case-by-case assessment due to pigment type.

Medical Contraindications

Laser tattoo removal may not be appropriate if you have:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding — We do not perform laser treatments on clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Active skin infections at the treatment site — Including active cold sores (HSV); inform us if you are prone to cold sores
  • Photosensitizing medications — Including certain antibiotics, Accutane, or other medications that increase light sensitivity
  • Autoimmune or healing disorders — Conditions that severely affect immune function or your body’s ability to heal may impact candidacy
  • Recent significant sun exposure or active tan — Tanned or sunburned skin significantly increases the risk of side effects

Pre-Treatment Guidelines for Best Results

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning: No direct sun, tanning beds, or self-tanners for 2–4 weeks before each session
  • Skip harsh topicals: Discontinue retinoids, glycolic acids, and strong actives on the treatment area for at least 1 week prior
  • Stay hydrated: Well-hydrated skin responds better and heals faster
  • Disclose everything: Always share your full medical history, current medications, supplements, and recent sun exposure with your Sparkle provider before treatment
Frequently Asked Questions

Tattoo Removal Moncton Q&A

PicoWay® uses ultra-short picosecond laser pulses to shatter tattoo ink into tiny, dust-like particles through acoustic photo-mechanical energy — rather than burning the ink with heat the way older Q-switched lasers do. Once the ink is broken down, your body’s immune system naturally eliminates the particles over the weeks following each session.

It depends on several factors: ink colours, ink depth, tattoo age, size, and your body’s immune response. Most tattoos require between 6 and 12 sessions for full removal, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Black ink typically responds fastest. Blues, greens, and purified cosmetic pigments take longer. We give you an honest, realistic estimate at your consultation — not a number designed to make you book.

Most clients describe the sensation as a snapping or splatter of heat — similar to a rubber band or a quick splash of bacon grease on the skin. It is brief and very manageable. Numbing cream and cooling options are available. Many clients are surprised by how fast each session goes.

Sessions typically take 10–30 minutes depending on the size and complexity of the tattoo. Smaller tattoos may be done in under 10 minutes. Larger or more detailed pieces take longer.

Many clients notice visible lightening after the first session, particularly with black ink. Significant fading is typically apparent after 3–6 sessions. Your tattoo will continue to fade in the weeks following each treatment as your immune system clears the ink — so be patient between sessions, the process is still working.

Yes. PicoWay® is one of the few laser systems that effectively targets a wide range of pigments, including stubborn blues, greens, reds, and multicoloured ink that older Q-switched lasers struggle with. Some highly saturated or purified pigments — particularly certain cosmetic tattoo inks — may require more sessions.

Yes, on a case-by-case basis. Cosmetic tattoo pigments can sometimes react unpredictably to laser — they may temporarily darken before fading. This is manageable, but it is important that we assess the pigment type during your consultation before treating. We have experience with cosmetic tattoo removal and will give you an honest picture of what to expect.

The white frosting is a normal, temporary reaction when the laser interacts with tattoo ink in the skin. It is caused by the rapid release of carbon dioxide gas and indicates the laser is working. It fades within minutes and is not a sign of damage.

In the 2 weeks before each session: avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners. In the week before: discontinue retinoids and strong active ingredients on the treatment area. On treatment day: do not apply numbing cream, makeup, or products to the tattoo. Let your provider know about any new medications, especially those that increase light sensitivity.

We welcome clients of all skin tones — PicoWay® is designed to minimize risk across the full Fitzpatrick scale. We do require a consultation first for anyone with a healing disorder, autoimmune condition, or current photosensitizing medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding clients are not candidates at this time.
