How Is Botox Used for Lip Injections?

The “Botox lip flip” is a procedure done with Botox injections to make your lips appear larger.

Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will inject multiple units of Botox into the upper middle part of your upper lip. When the muscles relax, your lip will curl upward. This lengthens your upper lip, making it appear larger without actually adding any volume.

Injecting Botox into your lip area can provide several cosmetic benefits or improvements.

Botox is the cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, a chemical that can temporarily weaken or paralyze your muscles. One round of injections can cause your muscles to relax for about three months.

When injected into the lip area, Botox can help:

  • Minimize creases in the upper and lower lip area
  • Elevate the corners of your mouth
  • Remove marionette lines or lines that run downward from the corners of your mouth
  • Correct a “gummy” smile
  • Enhance the upper lip, also known as the “Botox lip flip”

In most cases, Botox injections take about 10 to 15 minutes. Injections aren’t considered a surgical procedure, and no recovery time is needed afterward. You should be able to continue your usual activities immediately after your Botox appointment.

If you’re looking to add plumpness, talk to your dermatologist or plastic surgeon about adding a lip filler injection. You can opt for only lip filler, or use Botox and lip fillers for a dramatic plumping effect.

If you choose to combine procedures, your doctor will likely use Botox to create the lip flip and the filler hyaluronic acid (Restylane or Juvederm) to add plumpness. This effect usually lasts two to three weeks, making it a popular choice for special occasions.

What is Botox?

Botox is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Botox injections block signals from the nerves to the muscle causing the muscle to no longer contract as forcefully which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.

The FDA approved such usage in the late1980s when it was discovered that Botox could stop ailments such as uncontrolled blinking and lazy eye. Cosmetic physicians have been using Botox for years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. Botox is an approved treatment for frown lines on the forehead, crow’s feet (lines around the eye), and axillary hyperhidrosis (increased sweating of the armpits).

How does Botox work?

Botox works by injecting the muscle, so it no longer contracts as forcefully, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.

Where Botox can be used?

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines (lines in the nose)
  • Chin (for dimpling)
  • Skin bands on the neck
  • Around the mouth (for smoker’s lines and down-turned corners of the mouth)

Botox is not a facial filler – it will not fill existing wrinkles or add volume to your face neither does it affect the quality of your skin, elasticity or the pigmentation.

What is Botox used for?

Botox can be used for aesthetic purposes and other conditions such as stopping excessive sweating. Recently we saw an increase of men receiving Botox into the scrotum.

  • Temporary smoothing of facial wrinkles and improving your appearance
  • Severe underarm sweating
  • Cervical dystonia – a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscle contractions
  • Blepharospasm – uncontrollable blinking
  • Strabismus – misaligned eyes
  • Chronic migraine
  • Overactive bladder

How much does Botox treatments cost?

Botox prices fluctuate depending on where you receive your treatment and the number of areas treated.

It is worth doing your research before you undergo Botox treatment – and remember that going ‘cheap’ isn’t always a good idea.

Botox prices

Understand the cost. We charge per $10/unit. To give some perspective, the average person needs about 20-40 units to treat horizontal forehead lines, 18-30 units to treat crow’s feet around the eyes and 15-30 units to treat the glabella (men need more).

More is more, not better! Botox is a strong neurotoxin that has the potential to dramatically alter the planes of your face. And smoother doesn’t always equal prettier.

The average Botox treatment price ranges from $350 to $500 for each area injected. Botox injection cost can vary greatly according to the region and the doctor who performs the procedure.

The cost of your Botox injections will depend on other factors as well. The qualifications of the surgeon, the time of year, and how many injections you are receiving may all come into play when determining your final Botox treatment cost.

Most practices have a flat cost for each injection of Botox Cosmetic, though some will break it down by “units” used per treatment. Flat rates are usually somewhere between $300 and $1000, while per-unit rates are usually around $10-15 per unit.

How long does Botox last?

The Botox effect lasts for 4-6 months – this means you will need top-ups a few times a year if you wish to maintain your look. Once you’ve had Botox injected, the effects on the muscles become apparent within a few hours, with the main effects appearing in about a week.
