Botox Aftercare: What To Do After Botox or Dysport

You did the treatment. Now let it settle. Botox and Dysport aftercare is simple, but the first few hours matter. Avoid rubbing, pressure, intense exercise, and lying flat too soon so your treatment can settle where it was placed.

Facial Harmonization Moncton NB Sparkle MediSpa

Quick Answer

For the first 4 hours: stay upright, avoid pressure, and do not rub the treated areas.

For 24 hours: skip heavy exercise, heat, alcohol, facials, massage, and anything that puts pressure on the treated area.

In short: After Botox or Dysport, stay upright for about 4 hours, avoid rubbing or pressing on the treated areas, skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours, avoid alcohol and excess heat the same day, and be gentle with skincare and makeup. Mild redness, swelling, tenderness, pinpoint bleeding, bruising, or a mild headache can happen. Results are not immediate — most clients start noticing changes within a few days, with full results settling around 2 weeks.

First 4 Hours

What to do immediately after Botox or Dysport.

The first few hours are about keeping things calm. You do not need to panic or freeze your face, but you should avoid unnecessary pressure, rubbing, bending over for long periods, or lying flat too soon.

Stay upright

Avoid lying flat for about 4 hours after treatment unless your provider gives different instructions.

Do not rub

Avoid rubbing, massaging, pressing, or manipulating the treated areas.

Avoid pressure

Avoid tight hats, face-down massage, goggles, or anything pressing on treated areas.

Keep it gentle

Gentle facial movement is fine. You do not need to force exaggerated expressions.

First 24 Hours

What to avoid after Botox or Dysport.

You can go back to most normal activities, but keep the first day low-drama. The goal is to reduce bruising, swelling, pressure, and unnecessary movement of product.

Heavy exercise

Skip strenuous workouts, heavy lifting, hot yoga, or intense cardio for 24 hours.

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol the same day because it may increase bruising or swelling for some clients.

Facials or massage

Avoid facial massage, facials, facial devices, or treatments that press on the injected areas.

Heat

Avoid sauna, steam, hot tubs, and excessive heat the day of treatment.

Medication note: Do not stop prescribed medication just because you had Botox or Dysport. If you need pain relief, ask your provider what is appropriate for you. Some products may increase bruising risk for certain clients.

Side Effects

What side effects are normal after Botox or Dysport?

Mild side effects can happen after neuromodulator injections. Most are related to the injection itself, such as pinpoint bleeding, tenderness, swelling, or bruising. Some clients may also notice a mild headache or temporary tight feeling as treatment starts to work.

Redness or swelling

Temporary redness, bumps, tenderness, or swelling at injection points can happen.

Bruising

Bruising can happen with any injection and may take several days to fade.

Headache

A mild headache can happen. Ask your provider what pain relief is appropriate for you.

Temporary asymmetry

Results can come in unevenly at first. Wait until the 2-week mark before judging the final result.

Contact us promptly if you notice severe pain, signs of infection, significant swelling, rash, vision changes, severe eyelid heaviness, trouble speaking, trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, or symptoms that feel unusual or concerning.

Results Timeline

When will Botox or Dysport results show?

Botox and Dysport do not work instantly. The treated muscles gradually relax over several days, and the final result is usually assessed around the 2-week mark.

Day 0

You may have injection bumps, redness, or tenderness. This is not your final result.

Days 3–5

Some clients begin noticing movement softening around this time.

Days 10–14

Your result is closer to settled. This is when we evaluate outcome and symmetry.

2-week review

First-time clients or adjusted plans may benefit from a review once the product has fully settled.

Makeup & Skincare

Can you wear makeup after Botox?

You can usually apply makeup once any pinpoint bleeding has stopped, but keep it gentle. Avoid aggressive rubbing, blending, pressing, exfoliating, or using strong active products on the treated areas right after your appointment.

Be clean

Use clean hands, clean brushes, and avoid applying makeup over active bleeding.

Be gentle

Pat lightly instead of rubbing or massaging the treated areas.

Skip harsh actives

Avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids, scrubs, or strong active products the same day unless directed otherwise.

The Sparkle Perspective

Do less. Let it settle. Then judge it at 2 weeks.

This is the part where we lovingly tell you: do not stare in the mirror every 4 minutes. Botox and Dysport do not kick in instantly, and they do not always settle evenly day by day.

Give it the full 2 weeks before deciding whether you love it, need a tweak, or simply need to stop analyzing your forehead under bathroom lighting. We will assess the final result when the product has had time to settle.

No rubbing

Keep hands, pressure, massage, and face-down appointments away from treated areas.

No panic judging

Do not judge symmetry, lift, or softness before the product has fully settled.

No heavy workout

Skip intense exercise, heat, hot yoga, and sauna the day of treatment.

No rushing tweaks

Adjustments are best considered after the 2-week result has settled.
